Emil Kováč is one of the best european master artisans dedicated to the art of glass sculpture. This master glassblower started his career in the Czech glass industry in the 80s. After finishing his training at the Novy Bor Glass School, he worked for several glass-manufacturing companies throughout the region. With this experience in hand, Emil started to work as a freelance glassmaker, developing a personal style.
His first opportunity to create works in his own style and research aesthetics came in 2000 via a collaboration with the National Glass Museum in Leerdam, Netherlands. It was such a lovely experience that this collaboration has been repeated on an annual basis ever since. Emil also creates works for the Czech glass industry and studios around the world. He was even involved in setting up community glass projects in South Africa and taught glass design basics at Technicum, a university in Pretoria, South Africa.
When Emil was 13, a representative from a glass factory came to his school to display glass objects. Emil remembers thinking how wonderful and special it must be to create objects with our own hands that people can enjoy constantly. The following year he began his studies at the glass school in Novy Bor. After completing his studies, Emil started to work for a glassworks company and was amazed by this experience. He loved the intensity and physicality of the process, the possibilities of the material as well as the need for complete focus, attention to detail and cooperation with each team member. To this day, those memories that molded his life are still fresh on his mind. The influence of African design is noticeable throughout his works. He is enthusiastic to combine these influences with the techniques he has learned and mastered over time.
Emil’s favorite pieces are those that carry simple but strong statements. His work combines the colorful, energetic and unpredictable spirit of African design with the innate qualities of Czech glass design, as we can sense in the art piece Him.
