CULTURE is a new creative hub supported by Covet Foundation where artisans, plastic artists and designers keep alive the spirit of experimentation, by challenging the traditional concepts of finest Craftsmanship to create one of kind pieces. Wood Carving is one of the techniques that are being explored.
It was in this creative hub that was created a bench in wood carving. Designed by Elias Marques and Sérgio Correia, the bench came to life by the hands of Júlio Leal. This gorgeous piece will be one of the many that Covet Foundation will share at Maison et Objet 2019.
Wood Carving is one of the most ancient arts in Human History, it exists since the first men in prehistory, and is considered the fundamental woodwork method. Carved designs appear now in furniture design, in the building components of our homes and places of worship, in the household items we use daily and as mesmerizing and beautiful decorative sculptures.
Wood Carving has a cultural importance all over the world.
In Portugal, wood carving is an art that is usually transmitted from parents to sons: it’s a family business.
It’s usually used to create, for example, musical instruments, like “Viola” (guitar). Finding the best wood to create the finest musical instruments is a challenge from which master artisans never back off. To ensure the sound quality, the wood must come from old trees with regular and thin shafts.
Portuguese wood carvers are often inspired by their own life experiences or their region’s traditions to bring their creations to life.
This technique is also used by some luxury brands.
As examples of pieces where wood carving was explored, you can take a look on Marie Antoinette Mirror (designed by Boca do Lobo), Lotus Floor Lamp (designed by Koket) and some others.
Woodwork is a slow and hard activity that starts by using large cutting tools and ends with small blades. It is always a dedicated and detailed process that involves a lot of passion.
From wood carving to joinery, marquetry, turnery, varnishing, every woodwork technique is essential in the creation of fine art pieces.
