The Design<\/strong><\/a> in Portugal<\/strong><\/u><\/em> origin was due to the Portuguese New State\u2019s dictatorship to develop the\u00a0 industrial sector in\u00a0 time when the economic context of the Second Post War compelled it, in modernism<\/strong>\u00a0era.<\/p>\n

Engeneers, architects and designers start to be a new aesthetical discuss,\u00a0 and the actions start.<\/p>\n

Ant\u00f3nio Ferro,\u00a0a conservative\u00a0Republican of the regim, was the one political responsible of New State Ditactorial for the propaganda and national culture, between 1933 and 1949. After the Second World War, he continued\u00a0ahead\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0fostering\u00a0of\u00a0culture.<\/p>\n

Due his conservative\u00a0political\u00a0ideals, he and Duarte Pacheco\u00a0avoided\u00a0that\u00a0the\u00a0national artistic\u00a0production<\/strong>\u00a0disappeared\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0obscurity\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0regime. He\u00a0allowed\u00a0openness\u00a0to the creations of contemporaeos\u00a0artists\u00a0and\u00a0architects<\/strong> with the aim of developping the economy.<\/p>\n

In modernism concept, the\u00a0Hidden\u00a0modernism<\/em>,\u00a0<\/strong>a\u00a0term\u00a0used\u00a0to translate\u00a0a\u00a0very\u00a0own\u00a0style used in Portugal in architecture and functional design<\/strong> objects\u00a0that we can identifie as a unique modern approach.<\/strong> This brings us aestetical modern design in furniture<\/strong> and objects that were used to create\u00a0plesurable environments in\u00a0the\u00a0interior\u00a0of private or public constructions<\/strong> as dams<\/strong> or of the mines underground work galleries<\/strong>\u2018 as well as to equipate the surprisingly modern workers houses\u2019<\/strong> in the\u00a0neighborhoods, conceived by the youngests yet talented and cosmopolitant architects and designers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The great designer\u00a0of\u00a0 furniture<\/strong>\u00a0 and interiors<\/strong> that was not architect, Jos\u00e9 Espinho, a craftsman<\/strong>, with Olaio and Sousa Braga drew\u00a0part\u00a0of\u00a0the domestic landscape\u00a0 and\u00a0aesthetics\u00a0of midcentury Portuguese furniture<\/strong> and environments.\u00a0OLAIO\u00a0Furniture Factory<\/strong><\/a> hired n Jos\u00e9 Espinho as a consultant\u00a0of\u00a0Industrial\u00a0Aesthetics. This happened\u00a0 in the 30\u2019s, leading governamental suppliers of furniture in the portuguese modern period<\/strong> to acquire some of the most iconic design furniture<\/strong> m of that period. A\u00a0part\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0country\u2019s\u00a0history\u00a0sits\u00a0in\u00a0this company, with Jos\u00e9 Espinho design,<\/strong> chairs\u00a0and armchairs\u00a0being a significant part material of\u00a0 Portuguese midcentury modern legacy<\/strong>\u00a0that marked the Design in Portugal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
