Covet Foundation<\/strong> had the pleasure to contact Catarina Nunes<\/a><\/strong>, a young and extremely talented ceramicist<\/strong>, for an exclusive<\/strong> interview about her exquisite ceramic artwork<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

When asked \u201cWhat is the art piece<\/strong> you are most proud of from all the ones you created so far? Why?\u201d, Catarina confessed how hard it is to give a single answer. Each piece helped her build a path of discovery filled with moments of passion<\/strong> and fascination<\/strong>, but also frustration and growth.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery single piece I create makes me think about the world, how I fit in it and what I wish to express. I want my art to communicate a message, maybe due to my academical background in Design<\/strong>\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the art pieces that I treasure most is \u201cEf\u00e9mero\u201d, the creation which was born in Japan in my master\u2019s degree project.\u201d<\/em> It was carefully made of porcelain azulejos<\/strong> with three panels of 1m x 2 m and the process of creation went on for six months. The panels were connected by a wire and suspended 6 m high in a gallery\u2019s balcony. All the experiences of her life in Tokyo were hand painted<\/strong> in those azulejos. In her last day in Japan, Catarina cut the cables and let the work of art break in a million pieces against the ground, creating a loud sound that echoed in the building. This performance<\/strong> was her way of saying goodbye, of acknowledging her life in Japan as a simple memory, lost forever.<\/p>\n

Later, back in Portugal, she was robbed, and all the documentation of this piece stolen. \u201cAlmost like a prophecy, now the cycle has ended, and I can only keep the piece, as my experiences in Japan, in my memory<\/strong>.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

At the moment, Catarina is dedicating herself to a new project. The thought of sculpture<\/strong> as a physical object that blocks our vision captivates her and she wants to discover a way to surpass that characteristic. \u201cI love the idea to be able to peek the other side, bonding drawing<\/strong> with sculpture. I would like sculpture to be a sketch<\/strong> floating in the air, not a solid entity.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe sketches where the first concepts are born, where several lines collide, enchant me. My next project, which I intend to showcase soon, will follow these conceptual tracks.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Until now, Catarina is used to work with free shaping of ceramic paste<\/strong>, she lets her hands<\/strong> freely mold the object while it evolves into a three-dimensional shape.<\/p>\n

Catarina confesses she loves poetic design<\/strong> and the merging between art<\/strong> and craftsmanship<\/strong>, artistic movements that currently mark Portugal. ESAD<\/strong> was not only her guide, but also the guide of many other young designers that are now enchanted by art\u2019s poetry.<\/p>\n

She admits admiring projects like the one from Vitor Agostinho<\/strong>, a designer and artisan, whose work\u2019s mold transforms itself every time it is used, producing a different art piece always. Eneida Tavares<\/strong> and her unusual merging of different materials in industrial artworks or Anna Westerlund<\/strong>, a renowned designer and artisan are also inspirations.<\/p>\n

We can\u2019t wait to discover more about what the future will bring to this young and talented ceramic artist<\/strong> and designer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
