Barbara Nanning<\/strong><\/a> describes herself as a ceramic and glass artist<\/strong> and is part of a generation of ceramic artists who have defined contemporary<\/strong> Dutch ceramics<\/strong> since the mid-1980s.<\/p>\n

Thimo te Duits, art historian 20th century decorative arts, describes Nanning\u2019s work as\u00a0\u201cCombining tradition<\/strong> with innovation<\/strong>, Eastern opulence with Dutch austereness, freedom with structure and reason with emotion. Nanning\u2019s work is an interesting mix of unequal quantities without becoming complex; a fusion of carefully chosen and at times seemingly contradictory elements, which in the end look so self-evident that no one wonders about the unusual combination of ingredients.\u00a0She unites classical artisan methods<\/strong> with an innovative use of materials to achieve an entirely unique<\/strong> language of form, one which often develops in the making process, the turning of clay on the wheel and the blowing of glass.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

In her own words, her inspiration is \u201cnature, both organic and inorganic\u201d. She is interested in the forces of gravity, in the balance between positive and negative elements, between inner and outer form. She captures the essence<\/strong> of movement and growth in her work.<\/p>\n

Although she is trained in both ceramics<\/strong> and glass art<\/strong>, recently, she started \u201cpainting\u201d with glass, where the drawing follows the form. Colours repose as thin layers over each other, folding into the blown curves; they appear as Coloured Shadows coming loose from each other. Her aim is to transform shape and colour into a still life.\u00a0She also brings vigorously the gilding of glass<\/strong> into play, a totally forgotten decorative technique that literally and figuratively enriches<\/strong> the sensual inner surfaces of her dishes.<\/p>\n

The Dutch designer<\/strong>\u00a0was present at\u00a0Homo Faber 2018 in Venice<\/a>, the most exciting showcase of\u00a0European craftsmanship<\/a>. The glassmaker artist was invited to expose her work at the\u00a0\u2018Best of Europe\u2019<\/em>\u00a0room, where the most renowned\u00a0designers and makers<\/strong> of Europe were concentrated.<\/p>\n

At\u00a0Homo Faber 2018 Venice<\/strong>, she brought a few pieces of art glass<\/strong>, as the bowl \u201cVerre \u00e9glomis\u00e9\u201d<\/em>. Of the three pieces exposed, two were composed in orange gold leaf, blown, hand-formed and sandblasting. Another technique used was\u00a0Alexandrit Glass<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This exquisite art<\/strong>, used by Nanning\u00a0is an innovative technique<\/strong> with different kinds of glass, colours and intricate shapes, which create exuberant<\/strong> and unique<\/strong> crafts<\/strong>. What makes this work so distinct<\/strong>\u00a0is the dichroic glass type that has the ability to change from sapphire to lavender colour, depending on what kind of light shines on it.<\/p>\n

Her work is recognized world-wide, with her pieces being used by\u00a0French architect and designer Charles Zana<\/strong> and British interior designer Francis Sultana<\/strong>, two of the more\u00a0renowned<\/strong> names in the interior design<\/strong> industry.<\/p>\n
