Yesterday, 19 February 2019, a legend of contemporary design<\/strong>, Karl Lagerfeld<\/strong><\/em>, left us. Born in 1933, he was a German <\/strong>creative director, fashion designer<\/strong>, artist<\/strong>, photographer and caricaturist based in Paris<\/strong>. Renowned as the creative director of the French fashion<\/strong> brand Chanel<\/strong><\/a> since 1983, he brought M\u00e9tiers d\u2019Art<\/strong> to the spotlight.<\/p>\n

Lagerfeld was a mesmerizing individual with an endless imagination<\/strong>, capable of reinventing<\/strong> the brand\u2019s codes created by Gabrielle Chanel: the CHANEL jacket and suit, the little black dress, the precious tweeds, the two-tone shoes, the quilted handbags, the pearls and costume jewelry. Talking about Gabrielle Chanel, he said, \u201cMy job is not to do what she did, but what she would have done. The good thing about Chanel is it is an idea you can adapt to many things.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Alain Wertheimer<\/strong>, CEO of CHANEL, confessed: \u201cThanks to his creative genius<\/strong>, generosity and exceptional intuition, Karl Lagerfeld was ahead of his time, which widely contributed to the House of CHANEL\u2019s success throughout the world. Today, not only have I lost a friend, but we have all lost an extraordinary creative mind to whom I gave carte blanche in the early 1980s to reinvent the brand.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n

In 2017, thanks to his influence, Chanel celebrated its 16th M\u00e9tiers d\u2019Art show<\/strong>, honoring the finest Arts and Crafts<\/strong> from its artisan<\/strong> collaborators, which have a special place in the brand\u2019s collections<\/strong>. The runway show happened outside the traditional fashion schedule and honored his thoughts: \u201cnothing is more modern than antiquity\u201d<\/em>. His historical<\/strong> and cultural<\/strong> exploration of the past<\/strong> was the seed to many ideas which inspired his iconic collections<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Every year, Chanel chooses a different location to honor the workshops<\/strong> which provide everything from lace<\/strong> to silver buttons<\/strong> and fine embroidery<\/strong> work. Paris, Salzburg, Dallas, Edinburg, Mumbai and New York were some of the cities in which this special event took place over the years. Hamburg<\/strong>, Karl Lagerfeld\u2019s hometown, was the elected site for 2017.<\/p>\n

Allowing the audience to step inside the ateliers<\/strong>, Karl Lagerfeld showed to the world the fascinating behind the scenes<\/strong> of with Lesage<\/strong><\/a>, Desrues<\/strong><\/a>, Lemari\u00e9<\/strong><\/a>, Maison Michel<\/a><\/strong>, Massaro<\/strong><\/a> and many other houses dedicated to the finest craftsmanship<\/strong>.The artisans from Chanel\u2019s and its partners\u2019 workshops show how precious savoir faire<\/strong> is, especially when associated to contemporary creativity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Lagerfeld began to promote M\u00e9tiers d\u2019Art<\/strong> as a concept in 2002 in order to celebrate the efforts of the ateliers<\/strong> acquired by Chanel. Desrues<\/strong>, Chanel\u2019s longtime button supplier, was the first artisanal maison which became a collaborator, in 1985, however, nowadays, there are 26 maisons<\/em> representing every imaginable fashion expertise, including gloves (Causse<\/strong><\/a>), millinery (Maison Michel<\/strong>), goldsmiths<\/strong> (Goossens<\/strong><\/a>), and cashmere (Barrie<\/strong><\/a>). His will to preserve the endangered arts<\/strong> and crafts<\/strong> and to support master artisans<\/strong> was remarkable.<\/p>\n

However, we can\u2019t forget that this remarkable designer was also the creative director of the leather designs<\/strong>\u2019 fashion house Fendi<\/strong><\/a> and designed for several other brands, including Chlo\u00e9<\/strong><\/a>. He collaborated with a variety of fashion and artistic projects<\/strong>, always trying to search for the highest quality<\/strong> and the most innovative<\/strong> and creative<\/strong> ideas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The world will definitely never forget his incontestable influence<\/strong>. We will all miss his unique style<\/strong>, signature white hair, black sunglasses, fingerless gloves, and high, starched detachable collars. Nevertheless, we know for sure\u00a0Lagerfeld\u2019s impact will last and his outstanding creations<\/strong> will always be his legacy<\/strong> to the creative field<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
