Unfortunately, nowadays it\u2019s an endangered craft which can only be admired in special events which unite the finest luxury brands in the <strong>watchmaking<\/strong> field, as <u><strong><em>Baselworld 2019<\/em><\/strong><\/u>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\">\n<!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-7960-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/static.patek.com\/videos\/savoir_faire_rare_handcrafts\/Enamelling_EN_480p.mp4?_=1\"><\/source><a href=\"https:\/\/static.patek.com\/videos\/savoir_faire_rare_handcrafts\/Enamelling_EN_480p.mp4\">https:\/\/static.patek.com\/videos\/savoir_faire_rare_handcrafts\/Enamelling_EN_480p.mp4<\/a><\/video>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Enamel<\/strong> is a vitreous substance based on silica sand. It is transparent (known as <em>fondant<\/em>) and may be colored by adding <strong>metal oxides<\/strong>. Crushed to a fine powder and washed repeatedly, it is mixed with water to make a paste. After the surface of an object is meticulously prepared and a base coat added, the paste is applied to the areas to be enameled. Once dry, this paste is fired in a <strong>kiln<\/strong> at temperatures exceeding 800\u00b0C, <strong>fusing<\/strong> to the <strong>metal base<\/strong> and becoming extremely hard and stable. After the first firing, the cells formed by the wire partitions are filled with selected enamels. According to the type of enamel, the colours and the desired effect, several successive firings may be needed. With each firing, details are fine-tuned, colors evolve, and the final effect is enhanced, the play of transparency and depth intensified. This may be done mechanically for pieces produced in series, and for simple decorations on a flat surface or a basic shape. Photo: \u00a9Patek Philippe<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Enameling was stylish in the <strong>Byzantine<\/strong> era and blossomed at the end of the <strong>Middle Ages<\/strong>, particularly in regions where <strong>porcelain<\/strong> was made.
