Carwan is the first contemporary design and art gallery in the Middle East. It was founded in 2010 by the dedicated architects Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte and Pascale Wakim.

“Carwan”, the transliteration of the Arabic term کاروان, evokes the caravanserai where traveling caravans would pause to rest. They were paradises in the desert, sanctuaries of culture, traditions, and trading of objects from everywhere in the world.

The Carwan Gallery opened its doors in Beirut to promote a philosophy and practice which focus on this concept of the voyage as a slow, intense exploration, full of discovery and exchange.

Western contemporary design is there invited and challenged to cooperate and evolve with the traditional techniques of Eastern crafts, creating a flow of influences and creativity between the cultures.

With the mission of internationalizing design in the Middle East, showcasing its wonders to the world, the gallery exhibits extraordinary projects and limited edition pieces, focusing on special commissions of internationally renowned architects and designers, using carefully chosen materials and methods of creation.

The gallery was already invited to showcase its exhibitions at the most important art and design fairs in Dubai, Basel, London, New York and Miami, and curated design presentations in several museums and art centers. The directors of Carwan understand the huge importance of developing strong collaborations with cultural organizations, institutions, and specialized press.

Carwan’s partnerships with avant-garde designers and architects such as Bernard Khoury, India Mahdavi, Michael Anastassiades and Vincenzo de Cotiis were featured in international press and displayed in exhibitions in the United States, UK, France, and Italy, establishing the gallery as a noteworthy figure in the world of collectible design.
