During NYCxDesign, The Craft in Focus Festival presents several practical workshops, master classes and demonstrations by renowned international craftsmen. The visitors can expect to work with stained glass, violin making, hat design, calligraffiti, robot making for kids, basketry, mosaics, stone cutting, and much more.
The building 1 at Industry City will be specially transformed into a vibrant workspace, for all ages. This event was organized in collaboration with WantedDesign Brooklyn and IC Design Festival.
In a world where children are swiping their iPhones and 3D printers are building houses, the Festival feels like it is their mission to preserve the ancient art of true craftsmanship, and nurture it to flourish. This is a time of serial mass production and consumption; however, the beauty of handmade luxury quality pieces should be recognized once more. The knowledge of passionate, highly skilled, dedicated master artisans must be shared with the world.
With these objectives at the vanguard of their imagination, in 2013 it was founded an annual festival in Amsterdam, The Netherlands: the Ambacht in Beeld Festival. Since its huge success in the Netherlands, in May 2019 they are excited to bring this three-day event to New York for the second time.
The founder of the festival is Wendy van Wilgenburg, a Dutch cultural anthropologist and documentary filmmaker. She has a passion for sharing the skills of master craftsmen, ranging from violin makers to sculptors and windmill restorers.
Wendy founded the Windy Miller Foundation in 2010. The cultural nonprofit foundation aims to produce, write and realize films, documentaries and television productions, with special focus on craftsmanship and conservation of cultural heritage. The foundation organizes educational events, specifically focused on craft and culture.
