iSaloni 2019: Marquetry Butterflies. The marquetry wood art is the process of applying thin wood leaves to a structure to form decorative patterns, designs or even pictures. The wood veneers are drawn, cut, colored and burnt and placed using different tools, glue, and temperatures. Photo: ©Covet Foundation

Vitor Querido was born in Gondomar, in the North of Portugal, in 1961. Fascinated by wood, he is now a celebrated master in the Portuguese marquetry art. He started to work as a woodcarver when he was 16 years old. At the age of 18, he decided to dedicate himself to marquetry due the beautiful ornaments he could create freely and also by coloring by himself wood veneers into one of a kind hues. In the 80s, he started to work as a freelancer and to teach twelve young apprentices.
