From 8 to 10 May, the talented contemporary artist Sadie Clayton will host sculpture workshops at London Craft Week in the Lobby of Ace Hotel London where, for the first time, she will guide participants through the processes she uses to create masterpieces with her signature material, copper – the element believed to bring good luck.

Sadie’s architectural and unique approach to avant-garde shaping was born from her personal spirituality and the metaphysical properties of strong yet elegant metal. Her garments and sculptures combine voluminous shapes, twisted proportions and polished surface textures. Sadie uses copper to express her creativity, but also her working process is a moment to focus and internalize, a time of mindfulness.

London Craft Week: “The artist’s architectural approach sees copper manipulated into avant-garde shapes to create not only sculpture objects, but also more conventional uses. The artist’s signature material – and the element that brings good luck – copper, is cut, hammered and heated for a progressive finish. Sadie also has a personal spirituality which she draws on coming from the metaphysical properties of stones, and physiognomy. Themes which have been translated into her garments & sculptures through their voluminous shapes, or constraints and twisted proportions. The surface of the copper metal replicates the texture and composition of the crystals.” Photo: ©Sadie Clayton

Previously, Sadie demonstrated her creative process and techniques at Tate Modern and Tate Britain. In this two-hour workshop, participants will be able to create their own miniature tabletop sculpture using moodboards, pre-cut copper pieces and Sam Browne jewelries.

Embraced by the art world as a creator and innovator unique to the UK scene, Sadie was recently interviewed by BBC Radio 4 on their Only Artists programme, with Ron Arad the renowned industrial designer, artist and architect, about her perspective on what it means to be an artistic fusion with no creative boundaries, and was invited to create a video by Art Fund for the current V&A museum exhibition of Frida Kahlo, a huge inspiration for Sadie’s work, and another iconic female artist.
