Last monday, 21st January was a remarkable day in the Portuguese Design and Craftsmanship history. In Paris, the City of Lights, inside the outstanding Maison et Objet, the Talk conference “Portugal: Eldorado archi, design, craft?” enchanted the audience, showing us how much the future holds for Portuguese contemporary art and design.
Renowned speakers, as the designers Artur Miranda and Jacques Bec from Oitoemponto; the artist Joana Astolfi from Studio Astolfi; and Amândio Pereira, founder of Covet Foundation and CEO of Covet Group, shared their own ideas and knowledge about the possibilities that merging contemporary design and ancient crafting techniques in Portugal can bring to the creation of exquisite masterpieces.
Portugal is celebrated as a cultural turism wonder, but it is now also becoming a sanctuary for professionals that work in the design field. Many, architects, designers and artists, choose to open their workshops, studios and ateliers in the country.
Several ancient arts, as marble work, are a tradition in Portugal, showcased in a lot of exceptional monuments. Some materials, like cork and some woods, can be find in their finest quality state there and others, as exquisite veneers are brought from Brazil and Africa since the Discoveries. This old country is known for maintaining good relations of cooperation with other countries that were part of its history.
Cities like Sintra and Estremoz were mentioned as examples of places in Portugal where refined materials are used in extraordinary interior design and architecture.
